FEMZINE: CREATING ACTIVIST FANZINES

GRAPHIC ART, SELF-PUBLISHING, AND SOCIAL TRANSFORMATION

Femzine is a fanzine-making workshop that combines graphic arts, self-publishing, and critical thinking to give shape to participants' ideas, concerns, and demands.

Through printmaking, collage, hand lettering, engraving, graphic composition, and experimentation with different materials, participants create a collective publication that reflects their voices, experiences, and views on the world around them.

Inspired by the tradition of fanzines as a tool of free expression and cultural resistance, the workshop offers a space of shared creation where art becomes a way to communicate, question, and imagine new realities.

WHAT IS A FANZINE?

A fanzine is an independent, self-managed, small-format publication that lets you share ideas, stories, illustrations, poems, manifestos, or any other form of personal and collective expression.

Throughout history, fanzines have been a key tool for feminist, cultural, and social movements seeking to create their own discourse outside traditional communication channels.

WHAT WILL WE DO?

During the workshop we discover references from feminist self-publishing and experiment with different graphic languages to build a collective fanzine.

We will work with:

  • Hand printing with stamps, textures, and everyday materials.
  • Linocut and handcrafted printing.
  • Collage and image appropriation.
  • Hand lettering and graphic composition.
  • Drawing, writing, and creating activist messages.
  • Layout and editorial design.

Each participant creates one or several pages that become part of a collective publication produced by the group.

OBJECTIVES

  • Introduce participants to graphic arts and self-publishing.
  • Encourage creative expression and finding one's own voice.
  • Use art as a tool for reflection, communication, and social transformation.
  • Foster collaborative work and the exchange of ideas.
  • Raise awareness of the fanzine as a format historically linked to social and feminist movements.

FINAL RESULT

At the end of the workshop, participants will have created a collective fanzine gathering their graphic and written contributions. The publication is reproduced and bound by hand so each participant can take a copy home and share it with their community.
